Sydney Frank Paul

Little known outside his circle, Sydney Frank Paul (1883-1971) was a remarkable servant of the church of Christ. For many years he faithfully served as deacon at Galeed Chapel, Brighton. When he retired from work at the age of 60, he gave the remainder of his life to serving the wider group of Gospel Standard churches. He edited the magazines circulated among those churches, and wrote over 30 books. In all these roles Mr Paul was a shining example of grace in exercise: humility, commitment and love.

This book contains a biography of Mr Paul, together with a record of his spiritual leadings as written by himself. These are supplemented with samples of his writings, a record of grace in his wider family, and a collection of family art and photographs.
There is much lethargy and ease today, and few men and women who stand out as pillars in the church. The book calls us to ask whether we are faithfully serving the Lord in our day. It reminds the church of the lack of servants like Mr Paul. May it promote prayer and exercise in the heart of the reader that the Lord would yet favour Zion with true deacons like Mr Paul.

Review 'Sydney Frank Paul: A Pillar in the Church'

Mr Sydney Frank Paul (1883-1971) was little known outside his own denomination of Strict Baptists. And yet, in the reading of this volume, we have the remembrance of a godly man who ought to have been well known outside his own circle. The title page tells us that he was, ‘A Faithful Deacon at Galeed Chapel, Brighton; Editor of The Gospel Standard Magazine & faithful servant of the churches’.
This book comprises a number of sections which outline the life of this Christian believer. It is not a hagiography as one might expect, but a short biography in which we read of his many undertakings in his life and his ecclesiastical duties as both deacon and editor of the denominational magazine. This is followed by his own autobiography in which he outlines
some of his experiences. What came across to me was that, although he was a leader amongst the congregation of his denomination of Strict Baptists, he was a man of humility. In a period when his own church/congregation was without a minister, he undertook much of the pastoral oversight in helping members in their problems and encouraging them to continue in the way. This is to be seen in the published letters.
One section of the book comprises of articles written by him in the Gospel Standard Magazine. From 1967 to 1969 Mr Paul wrote a series of thirty-four articles in the which he deals with the ‘Experiences of Bible Saints’. Alas! Only one of the articles appears in this book. To read the remaining thirty-three, one would have to turn to the magazine he edited and read those remaining articles. I found that first article to be faithful exposition of Scripture, and profitable reading.
Mr Paul comes over to me as being a true Christian, a faithful Christian and a solid Christian, the like of which we do not often see in the churches of today: faithful, strong, but truly humble.
