This daily portion book was first printed in 1859. It has never been reprinted. The portions are much shorter, giving just a thought on a Scripture text. The text has been laid out in a special typeface designed for those with poor sight, and we have published it with the needs of our elderly readers in mind. Presented as a cloth hardback, with a ribbon marker, it is illustrated with facsimile pages from Philpot’s personal diary for 1868 and some lesser known photos of Philpot.

This is a book of daily portions from the pen of J.C. Philpot, which are shorter than the well-known and much loved Through Baca's Vale and Ears from Harvested Sheaves. The portions were first published in 1859. Under a chosen text for each day, there is a short comment, of one or two sentences, to prompt meditation in the truth. For example, for December 9th we have: "'Take root downward, and bear fruit upward' (Isa. 37. 31): The oak does not grow to its full stature in a day but needs years of sunshine and storm to give it strength and consistency - so do we need years of trial and temptation that we may push a deep root downwards and shoot healthy and vigorous (stems) upwards.” The publishers have produced the book in bold and large type especially to aid older readers. A facsimile of Philpot’s diary and some personal photos make it of added interest. We believe this venture will be welcomed, especially if alongside the reading of the portion the chapter from which it is taken be read, so that the context can be understood. We warmly commend this to our readers.
